Poster · Banksy - The Painter

The Painter is a stencil work associated with the London street art scene that humorously takes up the tension between "high art" and graffiti. A painter in Victorian clothing, with a wide-brimmed hat, bow tie and jacket, stands at the easel with his palette. But he doesn't take the brush to the canvas; he takes it to an orange, dripping graffiti tag that covers the wall behind him. The orange blobs of paint on his palette suggest that the tag is his own work. The classical painter and the street tag in one image: ironically, the motif asks what counts as art and what counts as vandalism.

A tongue-in-cheek reminder for everyone who smiled at this painter's brushstroke in our exhibition. And for everyone new to street art, a colourful introduction to the old debate between museum and street.

With its landscape format and orange accents, it lends character to a studio, study or design office. An ironic gift for painters, art students and graffiti fans!
